Frequently Asked Questions

Why are your quilts so much more expensive than the ones in chain stores or catalogs?

There is a huge difference between the quilts we make and the imported versions in many catalogs, although you may not notice it until after several washings.  Our quilts are made with the finest cotton blends of fabric, whereas imports shrink and fade rapidly with wear.  The quilting is often of very poor quality and seams tend to open, leaving irrepairable damage.  Our quilts are ALL made in America by  experienced Amish or Mennonite women.  The designs and quilting are of quality seldom seen.

There are so many choices, what is the difference between a printed top quilt, a  pieced quilt, and an applique quilt?

A printed top is merely a piece of fabric that is printed with a quilt pattern.  It is hand-quilted, and we offer some of these in baby quilts and wall hangings, simply because they wear well and are cheaper than pieced quilts.
A pieced quilt is great, very traditional.  A quilter carefully cuts coordinating patches of her choice and sews them together.  There may be dozens to hundreds of patches in a single quilt...then, of course, the quilt is hand-stitched.  Most quilts are pieced, a tradition that started in the pioneer days when every fabric scrap was put to use.
Appliques are the top of the line, the most elaborate of all.  Often an applique quilt starts out with dozens of flowers, leaves, or other designs sewn on by hand.  This is a detailed process that only the most accomplished quilters can manage.  An applique quilt may have over 500 yards of hand-stitched thread in it and can take a year to complete.  Applique quilts usually range from $600 to well over $1,000.
